Amy Alexander Ostrofe of Sun Valley, Idaho won the overall fastest women’s amateur title at the inaugural San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz.  This was a grueling race that included a 1500 meter swim that started near Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay.  Amy’s time 2:46:18 (swim 36:08, bike 1:16:35, run 51:17) was fast enough to place her in 7th place had she competed as a professional female and ahead of 4 other professional women competitors.  Her closest amateur competitor in her age group was 14 minutes behind.  Commenting on her race, Amy said “I was a little worried about the swim, but I actually found it enjoyable and was almost disappointed when it was over so fast.”

No stranger to the podium, Amy’s triathlon titles include first place in the Idaho Best of the US in 2009 and first place in the Maryland Best of the US in 2008.  She’s also been named an All American by USA Triathlon for the years 2007 -2009.  After collecting her first place... (more)

Teton Dam — A Wild Legacy at Risk

and

Transfer of Local Water Rights — A Controversy

Thursday, September 2, 5 to 7 P.M. at the Roosevelt Restaurant in Ketchum

Free Admission

Teton Dam

Almost 32 years ago, the Teton Dam in southeastern Idaho failed against the force of a 17-mile long, 270-foot deep reservoir. Eight months of stored stream flow and snowmelt crashed down the valley in less than six hours, swallowing the communities of Rexburg, Teton, Newdale and Sugar City. Eleven people died and the wall of water caused as much as $1 billion in damage, according to local reports.

Now, the dam may be resurrected.

Kim Goodman, the director of the Idaho Water Project, will update our audience on the study that Trout Unlimited launched a couple of months ago regarding this issue, and will show a film that was produced last year to illustrate both the history of this tragedy and Trout Unlimited's perspective on the proposal to rebuild this dam.

Before coming to TU,... (more)

Rusch crushes her former time and sets a course record to retain her reign as women's champ

Rebecca Rusch, the 2009 Leadville Trail 100 Women's Champ and three-time 24 Hour Solo Mountain Biking World Champion, has scored another high-profile victory taking top female honors at the 2010 Life Time Fitness Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race for the second year in a row. Finishing the grueling 100-mile race with a time of 7:47:35, Rusch beat her 2009 time by almost 30 minutes, and broke the course record set in 1997 by 11 minutes.

After a chilly early morning start, Rusch says the blue bird skies and temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s were a stark change over last year's freezing conditions.

She spent most of the first half of the race trying to shake second place finisher Amanda Carey. Rusch finally gained a sizeable gap at the Columbine climb.

"I just said it's now or never," said Rusch. "I just knew it had to happen then. And I just put the screws to her and it worked."

Rusch battled through leg cramps... (more)

For 10 days Team Mojo took to the road, exploring Idaho's far-flung trails in Sun Valley, Stanley, and the all but undocumented panhandle hard by the Canadian border. We left the MacBook behind. The iPhone was almost always out of range.

For now, you'll find a minimum of coddling in the Sun Valley region. Give yourself a couple of days to adjust to the altitude and you can make it as challenging as you like, from rollicking cruises along powdery singletrack in the woods to monster hike-a-bikes across scree-laden alligator-back ridges in the outback. Trust us, Sun Valley is as good as it gets.

James Byrd of Boise did the first full descent at high flows of the North Fork of the Payette River. View some great pics of the North Fork kayakers at Mike Leeds' Photography. This freight train of whitewater was once considered unrunnable.

Between Smiths Ferry and Banks, the North Fork has more Class IV-V (expert only) rapids in 15 miles than the Colorado has in its 277 miles through the Grand Canyon.

WildWater North Fork Payette Teaser from Anson Fogel on Vimeo.

"I think that has to be considered one of the hardest pieces of whitewater ever done," said Doug Ammons of Missoula, Mont., an international expeditionary kayaker who's logged many first descents of difficult rivers.

"I believe I'm the only person ever to have paddled it at levels from 6,000 to 7,000 cfs," Ammons said. "It almost never gets that high, and it is so intimidating when it does that people just stand on the side and gape at it."

For a few glorious hours every commuter's dream will come true:  Highway 75 will transform into a “no speed limit” zone.  Drivers will pin the needle right past the County Sheriff in search of their cars’ top speeds, all for a good cause.  Drivers have a two mile straightaway to hit their top speed, and another mile to cool it down.   In 2009 the cars participating included, among others, Ferraris, Bentleys, Ford GTs, Porsches, and they pushed speeds of 190 m.p.h.

The Sun Valley Road Rally will take place on July 31st from 11:00 to 3:00 between the SNRA and the Baker Creek parking lot north of Ketchum.   A viewing area for spectators on the course will offer refreshments, chairs, an announcer and a digital speed display as the drivers pass the speed trap.  Parking for the event will be at the Baker Creek parking lot 18 miles north of Ketchum.

The event raises money for the Blaine County Drug Coalition which funds programs that improve the health and safety of Blaine County... (more)

Goat Lake, off the Alpine Way trail, is a short but challenging hike from the Iron Creek Trailhead near Stanley. The challenge begins after leaving the Alpine Way trail on an un-mapped path leading above Goat Falls into the first of several high basins. The trail has several gravelly, exposed sections across open granite sections. Once above the falls, cross the creek and continue on it's left side the last few hundred feet to the lake, avoiding the fairly treacherous talus field.

The lake is deep and cold, but has rocks perfect a cliff jump to cool down quickly.

This photograph is a two shot stitch, made with a Mamiya 645 medium format digital, converted to black and white using Nik Silver Effects Pro.
