Clutter on the blogs

So, what’s with all the “Ads by Google” boxes popping up on the SunValleyOnline blog pages? Is Dave softening us up with his post, “Another tectonic shift away from TV advertising”?

For the benefit of the readers here, I’ll paste the response I sent to you yesterday when you asked about that new ad type.

“Milt — It’s a new thing that we have been testing on the blogs. The blogs are where we do some experimental stuff. I take it you aren’t fond of it. User feedback is important as to whether we continue stuff or not. I think the behavior is odd myself. It shouldn’t be a mac or pc thing as far as I know.”

I sent feedback to the partner that provides this and told them I think it’s a poor user experience. We haven’t taken it down immediately as they may modify it and we want to see the results of the experiment.

The reality is it takes money to operate a media property like this so advertising is the vehicle to pay for staff and infrastructure. We’ll continue to experiment with what works and what doesn’t. The stuff you see stick around is the stuff that has proven itself while we’ll do “weed and feed” with other stuff. It’s what I expected out of the media properties I advertised on and thus is the approach we take. We don’t feel entitled to any ad revenue…only what we earn by proving it.

Dave, it doesn’t bother me much. The only thing that would bother me are those “pop-up” windows that spring up from other websites. I notice that, as soon as I started typing, the little Google Ad thing went away. Gotta pay the bills somehow.

Ahh, I get it now, Tella-Marketer-Pop-ups in your face now, The phone rings all the time, the trash in my mail box all the time, Now we got Tella Marketer Pop ups. I’m just glad I wasn’t the only one seeing those things, I got enough problems these days, like that little man sitting on the stairs stareing at me all the time, I know he really isnt there, but I sure wish he would go away…….
